CONCLUSION

Although dramatic changes have taken place in Eastern Europe, considerable problems remain. Democracy in itself is not a cure for economic and social problems. Democracy, however, presents a unique opportunity for the growth of the personal values of freedom, participation, and the right to express oneself.

There is little doubt that the totalitarian regimes are a thing of the past. No matter what difficulties may confront these fledgling democracies they will not go back to the ways of the past. Yet, the road to prosperity may be a long one and the people must brace themselves for whatever hardships lie ahead— unemployment, inflation, and new social problems. These are crises that they have not been forced to deal with in little over half a century.

Although people are extremely concerned about the current situation, most feel that these problems can be surmounted over time and are looking to better life in the future—democracy is a long-term commitment. Despite the temptation to turn back from the path of radical change to a life that was easier and more stable, the overwhelming majority of people are solidly against any return to totalitarianism or even to a socialist economic system.

The strong desire for participation, plus the negative statements made by the respondents concerning the Communists and the former regime in general shows that the democratic reformers are not alone in their fight for a stable democracy. Democracy will endure in Eastern Europe.
